26 of 28 people found the following review helpful GREAT CAMERA, but DO NOT COVER THE MIKE!, September 29, 2010 By A.Y. (California) - See all my reviews This review is from: Sony DSC-WX5/B WX Series, 3D Sweep Panorama, Exmor R CMOS Sensor (Electronics) Customer Video Review Length:: 1:10 Mins
We purchased this 12.2MP compact digital camera because it was the ONLY product on the market that met all three of our requirements: (1) 24mm Wide Angle: 28mm is simply not wide enough for too many places we have visited. (2) Full-HD Video: 1080 HD at 60 frames per second is noticeably sharper and smoother than 720 30p & 24p. (3) Underwater Housing: For scuba diving.
24mm Wide Angle: WX5 has a sharp 24-120mm equivalent 5X zoom, which delivers considerably wider field of view than most compact digital cameras normally equipped with 28 or 35mm lenses.
Full-HD Video: WX5 delivers sharp and smooth 1920 X 1080 60i AVCHD and 1440 X 1080 30p MP4 videos that are comparable to our SR11 camcorder. The camera also has optical zooming and continuous auto focus in the Movie mode; however, a little zooming noise can be heard in the video and the zooming action is not camcorder smooth. From now on, the WX5 will be our main video camera for travel and... Read more

The mode wheel is very fast and convenient.
Movie button is convenient and switches to movie mode instantaneously (read below about focus issue).
De-focus mode looks Fantastic on the camera screen, but viewing on computer screen reveals issues.
Very low noise using the 6-shot superior-auto-adjustment mode. Lower noise can be clearly seen if comparing regular and superior mode.
Wide angle lens great if your subjects are not too close to the corners.
Choice of 2 movie modes (AVCHD and MP4). I prefer MP4 because it is more compatible with editing applications.
3D looks great when you can capture it correctly, but it is very tricky and difficult to master.
Smile detection works really well. It never misses. But the result sometimes looks strange because the subject's mouth is still moving when the picture is taken.
CONS:
Compression artifacts even in photos taken in broad daylight. Makes the photos look noisy even at... Read more
7 of 7 people found the following review helpful Fantastic camera!, September 18, 2010 This review is from: Sony DSC-WX5/B WX Series, 3D Sweep Panorama, Exmor R CMOS Sensor (Electronics) I have been searching for a new camera for a couple of months and was considering the TX1, W350 and T99. As soon as I read the specifications I knew this was the camera for me. I went to my local Sony store and one picture was all it took! It's amazing. At first when you look at the pictures, they kind of look different and then you realize it's because of the natural light. I've never had a camera that takes such true to life pictures. The panoramic feature is fun, but the pictures I took were a bit blurry. It's neat though to be able to take one picture of a whole room. The 3D is neat, but not the reason I bought the camera. The background defocus is great and makes for shots that look like they were taken with a DSLR. The video is simply fantastic! I highly doubt I'll use my flip video much now that I have this camera. In the first video I took, my kids were playing with a flashlight in low light and the video is perfect and you can see the light of the flashlight just like you... Read more
